I Sold A Horse Today

I sold a horse today.

I remember the day we brought her dam home, just a fluffy little yearling, already excited about the day she would produce a baby of her own.

I remember the day her sire was born. I fell in love the second I saw him, and I just knew how special he would become.

Her dam was slow to mature, so we waited for her, until she was ready. I got to think about this potential cross for many years before it came to be.

I remember the day she was born. Family and neighbours were watching on the camera with me, and raced over to see her take her first steps. Her first time momma wasn’t sure about this new tiny being nursing, and I worried – probably more than I needed to – as we tried to be patient in helping them both figure it out. Even once she was nursing, I watched on the camera most of the night, and worried until the next day, when a consultation with my vet and an IgG test confirmed she got all the antibodies she needed.

She was the cutest foal. I sat on a lawn chair to supervise her first turnout, and she pranced around and around me with the most adorable bouncy trot ever. She was friendly and precocious, for a filly, more than holding her own with her much bigger brother.

As she grew up, it became clear she was something special. Not because she was beautiful, though she was, or because of her pretty colour, though she had that too, but instead because of her personality. Tiny and calm and kind, she wanted to always be involved in what was going on. She had an affinity for children, picked up on new things quickly, and just loved to snuggle.

It was a perfect home. One where she will be loved and cared for, get lots of attention and where I’ll get to visit her regularly. I still didn’t want to see her go.

I gave her the best start in life that I could. I taught her life skills that will make the transition as easy as possible. I’ve loved her every day of her life. And even though I’m sad today, I know she’s where she belongs.

  1. Oh my! Such a beautiful tribute to all your equine kids. And to you. For me, it wouldn’t have happened without a breeder like you. I have several miniature horses raised by you and they are all gentle, gorgeous in colour and more importantly, each has a wonderful unique personality!! All thanks to you and your innate miniature horse sense. You always know just the right way to understand and respond to what each one is telling us at any given moment. I love all of my Curcle J minis and enjoy each of them every single moment of every single day. So much joy! Thank you.

  2. if I priced one of my horses high enough so that I made a nice profit no one could afford to buy them
